What a lovely example of an engaging living book We read this yesterday and the kids were captivated They asked to read it again today So we did Rapt attention Then they took out the paper and crayons and drew and drew and drew They all made plans for their own digging expedition complete with all the gear and food and how they'd pay for it It was incredible to see them so caught up in a bookThis book relates what you'd find if you dug through the earth and so you learn about the mantle crust outer core inner core etc All presented in a fun imaginative way You learn by having funAfter seeing them so excited I'm rethinking my science 'textbook' decision We're going to try 'living books' for a few weeks and see if the library has enough to keep up going And to see if they continue with this rekindled love of learning scienceCheck this book out from the library Or better yet buy it

My son and I read this book as a part of Sonlight's P45 curriculum This is a wonderful science book that really engages the reader As soon as we finished my son wanted to read it again The book is written like a how to manual explaining the layers of Earth Instead of a dry explanation of the various layers and their names the reader is taken on an adventure to the center of the Earth Not only are all the layers named and explained but the author explains what hypothetical euipment one would need to achieve this My only wish is that there was a little emphasis on the fact that we cannot really travel that far into the Earth The hypothetical nature of the story was too subtle for my four year old son He was left with the impression that people really can dig all the way through the Earth A uick explanation cleared it up for him Very much worth a read especially if your child is interested in geology

Read this to my 4 year old and she was extremely intrigued Very cool kid’s book that explains the journey you’d make if you could dig a hole from one side of the planet and come out on the other side What I liked most about it was the mix of scientific info presented in a fantastical way for young children A true delight for the little science lover in your home

Educational story about a child digging a hole through the Earth to get to the other side It goes through the types of matter and protective gear one would need to go on this expedition It is a uick read and one that we'll return to over the years as we talk about geology and topography
