This the story of a young child in 19th century France, whose parents have either died, are unknown, or have permanently abandoned him. He is raised by a couple for a few years until the step father decides to "sell" him to a travelling circus performer. He is dragged trough long periods of travel in winter, cheap hotels, unhealthy food, and hard work. A miserable and unspeakable existence for a child.

This book is so much fun to read it is hard to put it down. It's a picaresque novel about a young boy, sans famille, his travels through France and England and the colorful characters he meets. I had never heard of Hector Malot before reading this book, but now I can't wait to explore his other works.

    I loved the book!

This edition is a reproduction of a 1913 abridged text intended to be used in French language classes. It is both abridged and incomplete. In addition, there are pages missing and out of sequence. There is a diclaimer about this but it does not give the full extent of the problem. Anyone expecting the comlete text of the original in French will be sorely disappointed by this edition.

We read Sans Famille aloud. It is still a beautiful story with some true Dickensian twists. We enjoyed it enormously.

Le langage est celui d'un adulte. J'aurais préféré que ce soit Rémi étant enfant qui raconte son histoire.

Wonderful book, well written, filled with vivid details and riveting emotions. I was transported into the times, locations, and the happenings in each character's life, especially Remi. Could not put the book down until the last page!

The book is great of course as it’s the classic unabridged (I have the Kindle version). The audible version however is completely different, not just bits cut out (like in the English translation), but also lots of words and sentences have been changed.
You can’t follow it alongside the text, they are two separate things altogether. Which is a shame for French learners such as myself.

Superb story so well written in a French accessible to most advanced learners. A great way to revise French grammar as well as enjoying a nicely narrated story of friendship.
