Offered a sneak peak at Ruben Bolling's latest I jumped at the chance And why not? I've been a massive fan of Tom the Dancing Bug the long running political strip for which Bolling is best known for yearsBut Bolling's latest Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure is something of a departure from Tom the Dancing Bug Actually it's a children's bookIn hindsight I guess the cover was a giveawayAs I am biologically incapable of replication by inclination I found myself faced with a grim choice in order to make good on my promise to review Bolling's workExpecting the worst I googled vasectomy reversalApparently the procedure is possible but extremely painful Further there are a host of potential messy side effects Could I go through with it?Like I said I've long respected Bolling and his work But stillAs I considered further I realized that even if the procedure were successful there was still the matter of actually reproducing This apparently involves convincing another person of the overall merits of reproduction Given my life partner's disinclination to the idea in general I realized that this would take some doingOf course there was the matter of the waiting How long would it take for my potential hard won offspring to learn to read? When would he or she be able to type a semi cogent review of Bolling's Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club AdventureAnd what to do with the child after the review was finished? Ship him or her off to Bolling himself an avowed family man Would the author take responsibility? Or would I like so many artists of my generation be stuck with unwanted progeny the care and responsibility for whom would be far than simply providing fine books like Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure What do children even eat? How often do they need to be watered?Pondering these uestions and I realized that there were too many variables any of which might lead down life paths which I've assiduously avoided Then it struck me Despite the fact that Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure is intended for children I could simply read it myself Turning on a bright light and drawing my blinds lest the neighbors see me reading a children's book heaven help me if something like that got around the neighborhood I opened up my copy of Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure and began readingOK not at first First I fixed myself a bowl of ice cream chocolate chip mint which is my favorite even though it mixes weirdly with orange sodaThen after getting my ice cream I opened up my copy of Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club AdventureInitially I was worried because the very first page contains a scary foreword warning everyone that the book itself is actually a top secret report for members of the EMU which is short for the Exploration Mystery Unbelievable club and since I am not a member of said club I could get into trouble for going any further than page oneBut then I realized that the author himself had sent me my copy of Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure and since he is basically the head of the club I could therefore consider myself at least an honorary member So I kept readingI'm glad I did because by the fifth page I was already laughing out loud or LOL in kidspeak I'm not sure if it was Bolling's writing the sugar highmaybe a combination of the twoAlien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure concerns a trio of kids who form a club to find adventures solve mysteries and otherwise have fun The head Emu Stuart is also the narrator He's eleven years old a born leader and a future pyrotechnics expert Rounding out the club's roster are his best friend Brian and his little sister Violet There's also a dog involved but I don't want to spoil the surpriseThe dog is a very important part of the club's first adventureDid I mention that the book is filled with Bolling's cartoons chronicling key points in the adventure? This in my opinion makes it worth reading for any Tom the Dancing Bug FanAround page 40 of my reading of Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure things got weird both out of the story and in it My girlfriend came home while I was reading and saw that I'd left the browser window open to a page on vasectomy reversalsWhy are you researching vasectomy reversals? She askedNo reason I said Anyway I changed my mindThen she came over to the chair where I was reading Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure She made a faceDid you just drink an entire pint glass filled with chocolate chip ice cream and orange soda? It's for a book review I'm a journalist Let me workFine Whatever Don't come crying to me when the sugar high wears offThen she went out to the living room to knit or whatever which was a good thing because I wanted to get back into the bookBecause what had started off as a story about a group of children looking to create adventure to alleviate boredom had now turned into a story about a group of children who uncover a mystery involving invading aliens a household pet who's way than he seems a missing remote control device and the unbelievable but probably true truth about cats and dogsAs I mentioned things get pretty weird around page 40 of Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure And they just got weirderI don't want to give too much away because this is a book review not a book report Also my sugar high wore off somewhere in the last paragraph So here are the salient pointsFans of Tom the Dancing Bug will find some snippets of Bolling's trademark humor in Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure which resembles in some ways The Education of Louis a Tom the Dancing Bug standardThough not overtly political Bolling like Beverly Cleary Madeleine L'engle and other authors of fine children's stories manages to impart the seeds of ethics cooperation conflict resolution This he does subtlety which is a good thing most kids don't mind eating healthy foods as long as they're disguised as something funAlien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure is a fun book I suspect strongly that Ruben Bolling will be writing many continuing adventures starring the Emu clubThis I know gives away a bit of the plot since you now know that Stuart and the rest of the club members all live through their first adventure However since even Lemony Snicket is loathe to kill off children his his books I think this is a safe assumption for readers of this reviewKids will like Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure and will want to read adventures about the Emu ClubMy only complaint about Alien Invasion in My Backyard An Emu Club Adventure is that the book will create a new legion of fans for Bolling fans who'll keep the author so busy writing and illustrating new Emu Club adventures that he won't have time to create new Tom the Dancing Bug comicsTo any kids reading this review I sayBack off We found him firstThank you for reading this review I need a nap

The idea for the story was good but the writing was not How could alien pet invasions with water fights be boring? Read this book and find out I would not recommend it To be fair I only read the first 40 pages and skimmed the rest because I have decided life is too short to read books I know I don't like

Gets the Recipe Just RightWhat do you get with an early reader chapter book neighborhood kids adventure book? Usually they include at least these ingredients clueless parents annoying sibling loyal pet jerky friend good friend super smart friend uirky friend bully aliens or robbers wildly nutty plot even nuttier resolution The secret isn't in the list of ingredients It's in how you mix them together and season them To my mind this book is a very tasty offering Here's whyThis neighborhood team of adventurerheroes consists of our narrator his slightly obsessive best friendneighbor his little sister and his dog Contemplating a long summer they have formed an Exploration Mystery Unbelievable Club each kid got to add one word to the name Now they just need to explore an unbelievable mystery Which presents itself soon enough in the form of an alien invasionHere's the good part The narrator has a slightly clueless but energetic voice He's delusional world weary sometimes exasperated and a little bit of a know it all in all of the ways a kid can be But the author soft pedals all of this so that the kidnarrator's personality and attitude is never set up as the heart of the story The narrator isn't bossy; he's presenting a report with a lot of antic side comment on what happened in the backyard Along the same lines the little sister is represented as being annoying but she's actually a solid contributor So she isn't over the top Ditto for the neighbor best friend who pulls his weight in the story and isn't overloaded with uirks The kids basically seem to like each otherAs a bonus there isn't a lot of snarky dismissiveness about the parents who are actually presented as perfectly reasonable characters I get tired of books that go too far in banging on mean clueless lazy or idiot parents Where's the fun in that? And there is not a single bully so we don't have that overworn cliche bunging up the worksThe upshot is that these are fun kids to hang out with they have a crazy adventure there are some nice twists and turns and a few funny lines and we all get home in time for dinner This struck me as a nice choiceA final word of interest I first read this in black and white on a Kindle and the illustrations hadn't been laid in yet The book struck me as generally OK I then downloaded the book in my Adobe Reader and read it again in its intended final format with full color illustrations varied fonts and creative layout changes That added a remarkable amount of additional appeal to the book This is one of those cases in which the illustrations really enhance the storytelling and really help the young reader get into and follow and enjoy the story So it seems to me that if you are going to download this make sure it is on to a device that properly displays the intended layout Just sayingPlease note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book

Want to find out how Stuart Brian Violet and Ferdinand managed to defeat an invading alien race look no further this book contains the official report from the President of the EMU Club all about it Mind you if you aren’t a member of the Club the first part warns that you really shouldn’t be reading it all the reason to do so It like me you ignore the warnings you’ll be introduced to the four EMU Club members complete with pictures of them making you aware of their name age role expertise and career goal Stuart is the eleven year old narrator for most of the story and the other members of the Club are his best friend Brian his younger sister Violet and their dog Ferdinand Having given a brief history of how the Club was formed and named it then continues to inform readers about their first mystery and their battle to defeat the aliensThis is a brilliant story that will really appeal to early readers of chaptered books Stuart has a camera and this is supposedly used to take colourful snapshots of events throughout the story most taken by Violet These really enhance the enjoyment of the story and are likely to increase the appeal and understanding of the story to early readers The font used is like printed handwriting very appropriate as a child is supposed to have written the report and children will also enjoy this As a teacher I could easily have used this story to help children explore relationships to decide on an alternative alien invading force and how to counteract them to rewrite specific sections from an alternative viewpoint eg that of the aliens or Ferdinand etc Lots of potential activities from a brilliant story that children will enjoy reading independently The story has lots of unexpected twists and turns in it taking the reader on a roller coaster adventure that still manages to finish in time for everyone to get home in time for dinner A great story that has made me want to read further works from this authorThanks to the author publishers and NetGalley too for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review

Stuart Tennemeier his best friend Brian Hrznicz and Stuart's little sister Violet but only because Mom insists have a super secret club Shhh In their club they explore solve mysteries and do other unbelievable things Or they plan to but how are three kids going to find mysteries to solve?Never fear they find a mystery and it is a whopper I can't tell any details because it is super secret but trust me when I say there are robots aliens and world saving involved All before dinnerWritten as a comic bookcase book this promises to be an absolutely wonderful series of stories for the elementary crowd if this first installment is any indication I would strongly recommend this for second through fourth gradersLikely to be very appealing for the so called reluctant readers although I prefer to think of them as not yet enthusiastic readers This sort of book should helpRe posted from my original review on the My Comfy Chair review blog

Stuart Tennemeier is the president of the EMU club EMU stands for Exploration Mystery Unbelievable Club This is the club that he started to solve mysteries but not huge crimes For example one of the things that he tries to discover is what happened to the game controller that we lost a long time ago Stuart believes that there are a ton of mysteries that are all around us and he believes that if you look closely then you can discover things that my amaze you in the long runHow I would use it in the classroom This is a book that I would have on my book shelf but I would not teach this book in my classroom This is a book that does not have any educational concepts but it is a nice read for students if they want some entertainment This is not a challenging read but there are challenging concepts
